Carved in Lava: The Ethereal, Exclusive Escape at The Retreat at Blue Lagoon

Iceland’s most famous wellness attraction, the Blue Lagoon, has always presented a paradox. Its healing, milky-blue geothermal waters are a global icon, rightfully sought by all. Because of this, truly relaxing in them can be a challenge defined by crowded waters and rigid entry slots.

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon, a 60-suite luxury hotel opened in 2018, is the definitive answer to this paradox. It is not an add-on; it is an architectural masterpiece carved directly into an 800-year-old lava field, offering a remarkably private and serene way to experience this geothermal marvel.

From the moment of arrival, the service is seamless and warm. The property itself is stunning, a low-slung, cutting-edge structure of glass and stone that blends directly into the lunar-like landscape. The design is a stylistic handshake between the raw volcanic earth outside and the serene Scandinavian warmth within, using the slate grey of the rock and the earthy tones of the moss. It is quiet, secluded, and powered entirely by renewable geothermal energy.

The Accommodations

We stayed in a Junior Suite, which was compact but perfectly designed. The aesthetic is modern and minimalist, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering transportive views of the moss-covered lava fields or the blue waters that surround the property. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, and the rain shower was one of the best we have experienced.

You will not find a television or a clock in the room. This is a deliberate, and welcome, choice. The Retreat is designed for unplugging. The complimentary minibar and luxurious Blue Lagoon toiletries are thoughtful touches, reinforcing a sense of all-inclusive calm.

The Spa & Private Lagoon

The true centerpiece of the stay is the subterranean Retreat Spa and its exclusive lagoon. This is the reason one stays here, and it is an experience in a league of its own.

  • The Retreat Lagoon: This is the hotel's masterstroke. Guests have private access to a multi-level, labyrinthine lagoon fed by the same mineral-rich, 38-degree water as the public pool, but without any of the crowds. We rarely saw other people, easily finding our own quiet coves to float and relax. You can access the main public lagoon, but we found ourselves always returning to the silence of the Retreat's private waters.

  • The Spa: Carved directly into the natural volcanic earth, the spa is a sanctuary. We spent hours moving between the lava-walled steam caves, the sauna with its lagoon view, and the various, beautifully designed relaxation rooms, one dark with hanging nest chairs, another bright with a fireplace.

  • The Ritual: Included with the stay, this self-guided journey is a highlight. In a series of subterranean chambers, you follow a four-step wellness process of applying the lagoon's signature silica mud and algae paste, leaving your skin feeling immaculate.

  • Treatments: We also experienced the signature in-water massage. Floating weightlessly in the warm lagoon while receiving a massage is an unforgettable, almost primal, experience.

The Culinary Program

The culinary program is extraordinary, far exceeding typical spa fare. The hotel features two outstanding restaurants, Lava and the One-MICHELIN-Star Moss Restaurant. Moss highlights seasonal, local Icelandic produce, and we found the plant-based tasting menu to be inventive and world-class.

Breakfast, which is included, features a fantastic selection on its buffet and à la carte menu. We also loved the complimentary afternoon tea served in the lobby, a perfect way to relax post-lagoon.

A stay at The Retreat is a significant investment. But it is an experience that delivers on every promise. It is an architectural marvel that respects its environment, a haven of top-notch service, and the only way to experience Iceland's most iconic location in true peace and privacy. We left feeling completely rejuvenated, having seen the Northern Lights from the terrace after a helpful wake-up call from the front desk.
