In the heart of the rolling Tuscan Maremma, where cypress trees punctuate golden hills, lies a wellness destination unlike any other. Terme di Saturnia Natural Spa & Golf Resort is not merely a hotel; it is a sanctuary built around a geological marvel, a 3,000-year-old thermal crater whose mineral-rich waters have drawn bathers since the time of the Etruscans and Romans. Arriving from Rome, about a two-hour drive away, we felt an immediate sense of peace, the very air seeming to slow down.

The resort, first established in 1919 and thoughtfully redesigned in 2020, exudes an atmosphere of discreet luxury and old-world charm. It's a place where bathrobes are the preferred attire, even at breakfast, fostering a convivial and egalitarian sense of relaxation.

The Healing Waters: A Ritual of Restoration

The undisputed heart of Terme di Saturnia is its venerable thermal spring. Rainwater, having journeyed for 40 years through the volcanic rock of Mount Amiata, emerges here at a constant, blissful 37.5°C. The water is packed with minerals and the unique Saturnia Bioplankton®, renowned for its therapeutic benefits for skin, circulation, and relaxation.

There is a distinct sulphurous aroma upon arrival, an earthy signature of the water's potency, but we found we acclimatized quickly, soon associating the scent with the profound sense of wellbeing the waters impart. The bathing ritual here is one of passive immersion: guests are encouraged to grab pool noodles and simply float for up to twenty minutes, allowing the minerals to work their magic, followed by a necessary break before re-entering.

  • The Crater Pool: The main pool, built around the natural spring, offers an unparalleled experience. Bubbles rise from the depths, and guests can gently skim the nutrient-rich algae from the surface to apply directly to the skin.

  • Spa Park: Beyond the main crater, a 20,000 sqm thermal park offers four additional outdoor thermal pools, whirlpools, Roman baths, saunas, and an argillarium (mud bath area).

  • Indoor Spa: The hotel also houses an indoor thermal spa area with features like a scented snail shower and relaxation lounges.

Accommodations and Atmosphere

We stayed in a Deluxe Room, which felt welcoming and comfortable. While not offering sweeping external views, the room featured elegant furnishings, a spacious marble bathroom stocked with the resort's own Active Beauty bioplankton-infused amenities, and a plush king-sized bed. The hotel offers 124 rooms and suites across several categories, all designed harmoniously with the Tuscan surroundings. The pervasive atmosphere is one of profound calm.

Holistic Wellness: Beyond the Waters

While the thermal waters are central, Terme di Saturnia offers a comprehensive and sophisticated wellness ecosystem.

  • The Spa & Medi-Spa: The award-winning spa boasts 53 treatment cabins. We experienced the excellent signature Bioplankton body treatment, involving a scrub and soothing massage, which left our skin feeling incredibly smooth. The spa menu is extensive, including massages, facials (like the invigorating Kobido), mud therapies, aesthetic medicine, and high-tech options like cryotherapy. A team of specialist doctors and a naturopath are available for consultations, offering services from blood analysis to energy rebalancing.

  • Movement & Activity: Wellness extends to movement, with options including a fully equipped gym, yoga and Pilates classes, guided morning hikes through the beautiful countryside, tennis courts, and e-bike rentals.

  • Golf: The resort features a beautiful 18-hole championship golf course, eco-certified and offering stunning views.

Tuscan Culinary Delights

The resort embraces its Tuscan setting through its dining, prioritizing local, seasonal ingredients with both healthy and indulgent options.

  • Restaurant 1919: The main fine-dining restaurant, overlooking the thermal spring, serves breakfast (a lavish buffet) and dinner. We enjoyed refined, flavorful dishes showcasing regional specialties, expertly prepared by Chef Salvatore Quarto.

  • Trattoria La Stellata: Located on the golf course with beautiful sunset views, this trattoria offers authentic, high-quality Tuscan cuisine in a more rustic setting.

  • The Bar: A cozy spot for cocktails, aperitivo (served with generous antipasti), and lighter lunch fare like salads and club sandwiches.

Service throughout the resort was generally warm, professional, and attentive, adding to the feeling of being genuinely cared for.

Terme di Saturnia offers a unique proposition: a luxurious immersion in ancient healing traditions, complemented by modern wellness science and the undeniable charm of Tuscany. It is a place to disconnect, recharge, and rediscover a sense of balance, leaving you feeling revitalized in body and spirit.
