The Belmond Copacabana Palace has reigned over Rio's most iconic beach since 1923, a gleaming Art Deco monument that has hosted everyone from Mick Jagger to royalty. We came to see if its celebrated subterranean spa could live up to the hotel's five-star reputation, particularly after reading reports of service inconsistencies. Our verdict? Exceptional.
A Palace of Serenity
The spa reception team greeted us with genuine warmth and flawless English. The design is spectacular: pristine marble, cascading chandeliers, and ornate Ottoman-inspired details that transport you from the bustling beach into pure tranquility.
The facilities are vast and impeccably maintained. Spotless relaxation zones feature steam rooms, saunas, and a heated indoor pool with jacuzzi. The standout is the Snow Room, where you step from warm sauna into a four-degree-Celsius retreat with ice fountains. It's a rejuvenating contrast that awakens every sense.
Note that hydrotherapy areas are gender-segregated, though the spa offers beautiful dual-treatment suites for couples.
Brazilian Healing, Flawless Technique
The menu celebrates Brazilian ingredients through the exclusive AYASPA organic line, featuring Amazonian white clay, açaí, and guaraná.
We began with the Royal Hammam. Our meticulous therapist Ayfer led us through a 60-minute ritual in the authentic Turkish hammam: traditional kese body polish on heated marble, divine foam massage, and hydrating honey mask. We emerged with impossibly soft skin.
Our 90-minute couples massage in a private suite (complete with sauna and jacuzzi) was extraordinary. Therapists Luciana and Sarah delivered one of the best massages we've experienced. The warm-oil deep tissue treatment was perfectly calibrated, instantly melting away tension from our long-haul flight.
The Verdict
Our visit was flawless. The service proved remarkable and professional throughout. This is a must-visit sanctuary that sets a new standard in luxury wellness and justifies its premium. We left thoroughly rejuvenated, already planning our return.
