The Retreat Costa Rica, A High-Vibrational Sanctuary on Crystal Mountain

We knew the view from The Retreat Costa Rica would be good; we just didn’t realize it would be life-altering.

Our journey at The Retreat started long after dark, after a series of flight delays. We were escorted along a steep, winding road 45 minutes from San Jose into the mountains of Atenas, Alajuela, arriving at what felt like the top of the world. Our room, a Luxury Loft named 'Papaya,' was a sanctuary of minimalist, earthy chic. But it was the bathroom that commanded our attention: a deep, freestanding tub was surrounded by glass on three sides, perched on the edge of a mountain. In the pitch black, we could only imagine what the morning would bring.

When the sun rose, it revealed the why. We were floating above the clouds, surrounded by a panoramic, 5,000-foot-high vista of the lush rainforest canopy and the distant, glittering Pacific Ocean. This magical place, a true labor of love from its founder, Diana Stobo, is not just a hotel. It is a high-energy haven built atop a 50-acre crystal quartz mountain, and we had arrived to surrender.
The Ambiance & Accommodations: A Luxurious Surrender
The Retreat is designed for a digital detox and a full immersion into nature. Our loft was bright, airy, and notably free of a television or phone. Instead, it was appointed with thoughtful details for well-being: an essential oil diffuser, a sound machine, and a private patio with a swinging chair that quickly became our favorite spot for morning coffee.
The grounds are impeccable, a lush jungle of towering bougainvillea, massive poinsettias, and hiking trails that weave through the property's organic coffee plantation. We were even greeted one morning by Tarzan, one of the resident wild peacocks, strutting his plumage near the yoga studio.
This is a boutique property with only 18 rooms (soon to be 28), which fosters a peaceful, zen atmosphere. The staff, who are almost 90% local, are the soul of the experience. They are warm, kind, and incredibly friendly, going above and beyond to make every guest feel at home and like family. From our guest relations team (Jimena and Emerson) to the dining staff (Jonathan and Karina), the service was deeply personalized, intuitive, and flawless.
The Vida Mia Spa: A World-Class Healing Center
The star of the property is the 8,000-square-foot Vida Mia Spa, a true destination for healing. This is not a standard hotel spa; it is the first Ayurvedic healing center in Costa Rica, and its menu is one of the most extensive and advanced we have ever seen in Latin America.
The facilities are immaculate, featuring a stunning saltwater infinity pool with mountain views, a heated vitality pool with water massage jets, a steam room, sauna, cold plunge, and a tea bar. We began our journey with the Blissful Marma Massage, a deeply relaxing and therapeutic treatment that restored our energy centers. We also experienced Reiki and a sound bath in the beautiful yoga pavilion, both of which were transformative.

The spa's offerings are vast, ranging from holistic rituals to advanced medical aesthetics:
Holistic & Ayurvedic: As an Ayurvedic center led by Dr. Shaveta Jasra, the spa excels in ancient practices. We were impressed by the offerings for Shirodhara, Chakra Balancing with crystal healing, and the Udwarthanam detoxifying herbal powder massage.
Modern & Regenerative: The spa features a full menu of IV Vitamin Infusions (like the Myers Cocktail) and advanced regenerative treatments, including PRP and exosome therapy, administered by the on-site nurse practitioner, Dra. Vanessa Zamora.
Signature Experiences: We were intrigued by the "Self-Love Crystal Infused Scrub" (part of the Emotional Healing package) and the Royal Facial, which uses gold and silver to enhance elasticity.

The Wellness Programs & Cuisine
Most guests, including us, visit on a dedicated wellness package. These multi-night programs are designed for deep transformation. We chose the "Art of Resting" program, a 5-night journey to combat burnout, which included pranayama breathwork, sound healing, and aromatherapy massages. Other programs, like the 7-night "Fitness Reboot & Fat Burning" or the signature "Naked Challenge" detox, are just as comprehensive.
This holistic approach extends to the cuisine at Sol Terrace. We were initially surprised to learn there is no menu. At each meal, the server simply announces what the chef has prepared. This surrender became one of the highlights of our stay. The food is farm-to-table, anti-inflammatory, grain-free, and dairy-free. Every single meal was elegant, inventive, and absolutely delicious, from the special breakfast granola to the artfully prepared dinners.
The Luxe Verdict
The Retreat Costa Rica is one of the best wellness experiences we have ever had. It is a magical place that perfectly balances five-star service, luxurious accommodations, and a top-notch, deeply authentic wellness philosophy. While a significant financial investment, the value is undeniable. We left feeling completely restored, lighter, and inspired.
