The Island of Weightlessness: A Review of Joali Being, Maldives

The Maldivian vernacular is well established. We know the script: the overwater villa, the private pool, the personal butler. It is a formula for profound relaxation, but it is, by now, a familiar one. JOALI BEING, a private island in the Raa Atoll that opened in 2021, does not ignore this script, but it treats it as mere prelude. This resort is not just a destination; it is a profound concept, the region's first dedicated "wellbeing island."

The experience begins on arrival at the "Gate of Zero," a stunning, futuristic jetty that signals a transition from the everyday to a world of intentional calm. The resort’s core philosophy, reportedly developed with an Oxford professor, is centered on healing and achieving a sense of "weightlessness." This is built upon Four Pillars: Mind, Skin, Microbiome, and Energy.
The "Well Living Space," a Grand Ocean Pool Villa, was a testament to this philosophy. The 68 villas, split between beach and overwater, are masterpieces of biophilic design. Architects Autoban crafted spaces with high, chapel-like ceilings, using a soothing palette of natural wood, stone, and marble in soft pinks, greens, and grays. The rooms feel zen and timeless, equipped with meditative instruments and, by design, no television.

But the accommodations are secondary to the island's true purpose. The wellness infrastructure here is perhaps the most comprehensive in the world, housed in a collection of stunning, purpose-built centers.
AREKA: The main wellness hub, featuring 39 treatment rooms, some with glass floors overlooking the ocean, and an over-water meditation deck.
Kaashi (Hydrotherapy): A sprawling hydrotherapy hall. It houses a traditional Russian Banya for heat and steam rituals, an Aufguss Sauna using oils and music, a sensory deprivation room, and a salt inhalation room. We found the Watsu (water-based shiatsu) treatment to be deeply relaxing.
Seda (Sound Healing): A sound therapy hall, created in collaboration with visionary Aurelio C. Hammer, designed to restore inner balance through vibration. This is complemented by the Discovery Sound Path, a trail through the jungle dotted with outdoor instruments.
AKTAR (Herbology): The stunning herbology center is inspired by a spice market. Here, guests can join interactive workshops to create bespoke herbal teas, natural body creams, and massage oils from the island's library of herbs.
Core (Fitness): This is far beyond a standard hotel gym. It is a high-tech movement and fitness space with diagnostic rooms, 3D body scanners, private training studios, and a cryotherapy chamber.

This deep commitment to wellness extends to the culinary arts. The resort’s "earth-to-table" philosophy is guided by nutritionists, with a clear focus on sustainable, fresh, and nutrition-forward cuisine.
For us, the highlight was FLOW, the main dining space. It brilliantly features three distinct open kitchens, including Plantae, which is dedicated entirely to vegetarian and vegan cuisine. The B’Well kitchen features the signature JOALI BEING menu, focusing on whole-food, earth-to-table dishes.
The experience is further elevated at SAI, the dedicated tea lounge. A resident Tea Master guides guests through tea ceremonies and tastings of over 72 varieties. Other outlets, like the poolside MOJO and the Japanese restaurant Yutori (conceptualized by a Michelin-acclaimed chef), round out the offerings.
Beyond the self, the resort shows a commitment to the planet. It is home to one of the Maldives' turtle conservation sanctuaries and a reef restoration project, inviting guests to contribute to marine health.

JOALI BEING is a rare property that fulfills its ambitious promise. It synthesizes high design, advanced wellness technology, and holistic philosophy into an experience that feels both luxurious and genuinely transformative. This is not the Maldives as usual; it is a complete recalibration.
