Arriving at Azura Benguerra Island, we felt immediately transported. The journey itself-crossing the turquoise waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago by boat-was a fitting prelude to what awaited us: an all-inclusive Mozambique island resort that feels both secluded and vibrantly connected to its natural surroundings.

Setting and Arrival
Azura Benguerra Island is set along a stretch of untouched beach, flanked by ancient casuarina trees and bordered by calm, crystalline water. The sense of place is unmistakable here. As we stepped off the boat, staff greeted us with song and a cool towel, a warm welcome that set the tone for our stay.
The island’s landscape is striking, with lush greenery on one side and dramatic sand dunes on the other.
Villas are spaced for privacy, each offering direct beach access and sweeping ocean views.
The property’s design incorporates local materials, blending thatch, wood, and stone with contemporary touches.
Villas: Privacy and Comfort
We stayed in two different villas during our visit, each with its own distinct character.
Beach Villa:
Modern outdoor furniture and a spacious deck provided the perfect spot for sunset views.
The villa’s design is fresh, though a few older fixtures remain.
Each villa comes with its own sun loungers and a thatched shade, steps from the gentle surf.
Deluxe Sea View Pool Villa:
Perched above the beach, these villas felt exceptionally private.
Expansive decks, an outdoor shower, and a plunge pool offered ample space for relaxation.
The light stone walls and thoughtful layout created a sense of calm and seclusion.
While some areas of the property show their age, the overall comfort and tranquility far outweigh any minor imperfections.

The Beach and Island Life
The beach here is truly spectacular-powdery sand and clear, calm waters that invite swimming at any time of day. It is not entirely private, which for us added to the authenticity of the experience. Local children and fishermen sometimes passed by, offering glimpses into the rhythms of island life.
The resort’s location within the Bazaruto Archipelago means guests are surrounded by one of Africa’s most biodiverse marine environments.
The west side of the island is lush and palm-lined, while the east features towering dunes that are a must-see at sunrise or sunset.
Activities and Experiences
Azura Benguerra Island is much more than a place to unwind. We found a wealth of activities that allowed us to explore the island’s unique landscape and vibrant marine life.
Highlights:
Diving and Snorkeling: The nearby marine park is home to dolphins, turtles, rays, and, in season, even whales and manatees. The resort’s PADI-certified dive center can arrange excursions for all levels.
Sand Dune Excursions: Guided trips to the island’s dunes at sunrise or sunset were among our favorite experiences, with panoramic views and golden light.
Boat Tours: We enjoyed a half-day trip to neighboring islands, with opportunities to snorkel and swim in pristine lagoons.
Nature Walks and Horse Riding: The island’s trails and beaches are ideal for exploring on foot or horseback.
Wellness: The spa, set high above the beach, offers treatments with sweeping ocean views.

Dining
Dining at Azura Benguerra Island is a celebration of local flavors, with plenty of plant-based items. We were delighted by the variety and creativity of the vegan options, from abundant breakfasts with fresh tropical fruit and homemade breads to inventive dinners inspired by Mozambican and Mediterranean traditions.
Meals can be enjoyed in the main restaurant, on the beach, or privately on your villa deck.
The resort is happy to accommodate dietary preferences, and we found the vegan offerings both satisfying and beautifully presented.
Service and Ambience
Service at Azura Benguerra Island is attentive and genuine. While some staff are still refining their skills, the overall atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and unfailingly helpful. Each villa is assigned a personal host, who assists with everything from arranging activities to customizing meals.
